On Friday, Pam Bondi appointed interim US attorney Jay Clayton to head an probe into political adversaries of the President and their connections with Jeffrey Epstein. This move came hours after the president instructed her to begin the probe.
During an announcement, Bondi commended Jay Clayton as “one of the most capable and trusted prosecutors in the country”. She stated, “This case will be addressed with speed and honesty to ensure public transparency.”
This action appears to contradict a July memo from justice department officials which declared that documents related to Epstein lacked grounds for additional investigations. According to the document, authorities “did not uncover evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties”
The announcement comes as growing pressure from Trump on congressional Republicans to block the public disclosure of Epstein-related documents before an upcoming House vote in the coming days. Several lawmakers are expected to back the disclosure.
Newly public communications from Jeffrey Epstein have highlighted Trump’s past involvement with the convicted criminal, including details that he was more aware of Epstein’s actions than earlier acknowledged.
On Friday, Trump announced he would ask the DOJ to examine connections between Epstein and Democratic figures, specifically naming prominent individuals such as Clinton, Summers, and Hoffman. Paradoxically, Trump also referred to the “Epstein situation” as a “scam”.
Other notable events featured calls to safeguard public lands, objections of an antisemitism watchdog, and a judge’s decision for a resolution in the Purdue Pharma case.
